About this Story

“Creativity, Resourcefulness, Sustainability”

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat book cover showing Joseph in his overcoat

Just read Joseph Had a Little Overcoat and wow, this book is kinda genius! 👔 It’s about this old guy Joseph who has this beat-up coat that’s totally falling apart. Instead of throwing it away, he cuts it down into a jacket, then a vest, then keeps making it smaller until it’s just a tiny button.

The coolest part? The actual book has holes cut right through the pages - you can literally see the coat getting smaller as you turn each page. It’s so clever!

This book won the 2000 Caldecott Medal, which makes total sense. The whole “make something from nothing” message hits different when you’re actually seeing it happen through the book itself. My kids were fascinated by the interactive element. If you want more info on Caldecott winners, check out the American Library Association site.

Super creative way to teach kids about resourcefulness and not being wasteful! 🌱
