About this Story

“Creativity, Self-expression, Acceptance”

Ish book cover by Peter H. Reynolds - children’s creativity book

Ish basically saved my sanity during my kid’s “I can’t draw!” phase 🎨 My daughter went from refusing to pick up crayons to creating “tree-ish” masterpieces everywhere. Peter H. Reynolds nailed it with this one - it’s part of his famous “Creatrilogy” series along with The Dot and Sky Color.

Ramon starts out loving to draw everything, until his older brother crushes his confidence with one mean comment. Sound familiar? 😬 But here’s where it gets good - his little sister saves all his crumpled-up “failed” drawings and turns them into the most beautiful art gallery ever.

Reynolds shows how Ramon discovers “ish-ful” creativity after his quest to be a perfectionist, and honestly, that’s pure genius. Instead of perfect circles, Ramon learns to make “circle-ish” shapes. Instead of exact trees, he draws “tree-ish” ones.

What I love most is how realistic this feels. Every parent knows that moment when kids suddenly become their own worst critics. School Library Journal gave it a starred review calling it life-changing, and teachers everywhere use it for confidence building.

The illustrations are deliberately loose and sketchy - which is the whole point! It shows kids that art doesn’t need to be “perfect” to be meaningful ✨ Perfect for ages 4-8, especially perfectionistic kids who get frustrated easily. Art therapists love this one too. Grab your copy at or check out more reviews on Goodreads. Your little artist will be drawing “ish-style” in no time! 🌟
